Physical-chemical monitoring and characterization of ciliate communities from a full-scale rotating biological system (RBC) have been carried out for a year. RBC system operated efficiently in removing the organic matter, as the decrease of the BOD5 loading along the successive RBC units revealed. 55 species of ciliated protozoa were identified in the RBC biofilms. Differences in abundance, occurrence and type of species were found along the different units of the RBC system; the last RBC held a more stable and diverse ciliate community. The complexity of interspecific relationships among the ciliates has been outlined using multivariate methods (Cluster and Correspondence analysis). Correlation between ciliate species and physical-chemical conditions were obtained by regression analysis. Results show that 12 species of ciliates were related to an optimal efficiency in organic matter removal, Litonotus crystallinus being the most sensitive species. The presence and abundance of Litonotus crystallinus and Acineria uncinata was associated with a decrease in the organic factor. Metopus es was the only species related to a decrease in process efficiency due to its association with an increase in organic factor. The results provide statistical evidence of the use of certain ciliate species as reliable bioindicators in full-scale RBC wastewater treatment plants.  相似文献

Apoptosis is known to be associated with wound healing and regeneration of dental pulp. We examined the effects of heat stress on clonal dental pulp cell line (RPC-C2A cells) to clarify the pulp wound healing process. RPC-C2A cells were exposed to heat stress at 43 degrees C for 45 min. After several time intervals, the inhibition of cell proliferation and apoptosis induction were analyzed by cell viability assay, DNA gel electrophoresis, nuclear staining, and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase mediated labeling assay. RPC-C2A cells showed the thermotolerance following heat stress. We found that apoptosis was induced in some RPC-C2A cells, whereas others remained alive, and observed the engulfment of apoptotic cells by scavenger-like RPC-C2A cells following heat stress. We also analyzed the phagocytotic activity of RPC-C2A cells and found that they had an ability to engulf apoptotic RPC-C2A cells, which was stimulated by heat stress. These results suggest that heat stress induces apoptosis of RPC-C2A cells, which are phagocytosed by the surviving RPC-C2A cells.  相似文献

Phenotypic variability is evaluated in a series of skeletal samples from the Apalachee region of Florida. Based on ethnohistoric evidence, several predictive models for changes in variability are generated. If variability decreases through time, this likely represents the effect of genetic drift in populations experiencing epidemic disease and population loss. If variability increases through time, this suggests that population aggregation or genetic admixture were primary factors shaping the Apalachee population during the mission period. Dental dimensions were collected from a series of precontact (pre-1500), early mission (AD 1633-1650) (San Pedro y San Pablo de Patale), and late mission (post-1657) (San Luis) samples from the Apalachee region and were subjected to univariate and multivariate variability analyses. The results indicate that the late mission San Luis sample was significantly more variable than the Patale or precontact samples; however, the Patale sample exhibited no significant variability change in comparison to the precontact population. This suggests that the missions initially effected limited change in genetic variability in the mission populations. However, San Luis was affected by either admixture or population aggregation to such a degree that the observed variation had increased beyond earlier levels. Given the limited historic evidence for population aggregation at this mission, and the comparatively large resident Spanish population, the increased variability may be indicative of admixture at this mission, and potentially at this mission only. Based on a limited data set, however, it appears that the mission period cannot be typified by a single evolutionary or historic process.  相似文献

This study uses elliptical Fourier analysis to quantify shape differences observed in the P(4) crown of Neandertals and anatomically modern humans. Previously, P(4) shape was assessed qualitatively, and results suggested marked differences between Neandertals and anatomically modern humans (Bailey [2002] New Anat. 269:148-156). The goal of this study was to investigate the P(4) shape in more detail, quantifying it in order to determine its utility for taxonomic classification and phylogenetic analysis. A comparison of mean shapes confirms that the mesiolingual portion of the P(4) is truncated in Neandertals, and that this produces a distinctively asymmetrical P(4). A randomization test confirms that the shape difference between Neandertals and anatomically modern humans is significant. Principal component and discriminant function analyses indicate that the relative size of the lingual portion of the tooth also affects tooth shape, with the lingual portion of the Neandertal P(4) being narrower than that of anatomically modern humans. Classification of P(4) crown shapes using discriminant functions analysis is far from perfect. While 86.4% of the teeth were correctly classified, classification was much better for anatomically modern humans (98.1%) than it was for Neandertals (65%). Fortunately, crown shape is but one of several diagnostic characters of the P(4) crown. P(4) crown asymmetry can be added to the growing list of dental morphological characters distinguishing Neandertals from anatomically modern humans. Moreover, based on a comparison of mean tooth shapes in fossil and recent humans, symmetry, rather than asymmetry, appears to be the primitive state, and the high frequency of P(4) asymmetry is likely derived in Neandertals.  相似文献

This report documents greater variability in early hominin first molar dental trait frequencies than previous research indicated. Specifically, frequencies of several M1 dental traits that previously appeared to uniquely characterize Paranthropus are shown here to resemble those of the A. afarensis sample from Hadar. Like Paranthropus, A. afarensis from Hadar has a high frequency of cusp 6 and a low frequency of the protostylid. Paranthropus and A. afarensis are also not statistically significantly different in their frequencies of LM1 cusp 7, although this cusp is actually absent in the latter. Both groups differ significantly from A. africanus in their frequencies of these traits. Based on the developmental biology of molar cusp patterns, we suggest that the morphological similarities between Paranthropus and the Hadar sample may be homoplasies.  相似文献

Cusp dimensions of human maxillary molars were compared between males and females to determine whether the later-developed, distal cusps displayed greater sexual dimorphism than the earlier-developed, mesial cusps, and whether the later-forming second molar displayed greater sexual dimorphism than the first molar. First and second permanent molar crowns (M1 and M2) were measured indirectly, using dental casts obtained from 117 Japanese (65 males and 52 females). Measurements included maximum mesiodistal and buccolingual crown diameters and the diameters of the four main cusps: the paracone, protocone, metacone, and hypocone. Mean values of crown dimensions were larger in males than in females for both M1 and M2, but the sexual difference in protocone diameter of M1 was not significant. The protocone in M1 showed the least amount of sexual dimorphism, followed by the metacone, hypocone, and paracone, while in M2, the percentage sexual dimorphism corresponded to the order of cusp formation: paracone, protocone, metacone, and hypocone. With the exception of the paracone diameter, M2 showed greater sexual dimorphism than M1. Sexual dimorphism was not always greater in the later-developed, distal cusps of M1 or M2, but the protocone, the most important cusp in terms of occlusal function, displayed the least dimorphism in M1.  相似文献

Finds of deliberate dental modification have for the first time been found in archaeological human skeletal material from Europe. The type of modification is a horizontally filed furrow on the frontal upper part of the tooth crown. The furrows are single or, more usually, multiple, and are found on the front teeth in the maxilla. The affected individuals are 24 men from the Viking Age (ca. 800-1050 AD), found in present day Sweden and Denmark. The marks are so well-made that it is most likely they were filed by a person of great skill. The reason for, and importance of, the furrows are obscure. The affected individuals may have belonged to a certain occupational group (such as tradesmen), or the furrows could have been pure decoration.  相似文献

AIMS: To construct a genetically modified strain of Streptococcus mutans for dental caries prevention. The strain has significantly reduced cariogenicity owing to a deletion of the entire open reading frame for lactate dehydrogenase, and has excellent colonization potential through the production of a natural antibiotic called mutacin 1140. For use in human clinical trials, additional mutations were introduced to enable rapid elimination of the strain in case of adverse side effects and to increase genetic stability. METHODS: Deletion mutations were introduced into the dal gene for d-alanine biosynthesis and the comE gene for genetic transformation. The resulting strain, A2JM, was tested for dependence on exogenous d-alanine and its ability to be eradicated from colonized rats. The strain was also tested for its ability to exchange DNA with another strain of S. mutans in in vitro and in vivo models. CONCLUSIONS: A2JM was completely dependent on exogenous d-alanine, but could colonize the oral cavity of rats in low numbers in the absence of dietary d-alanine. Results indicated that A2JM can scavenge d-alanine from other plaque bacteria. Lowering of the total oral bacterial load through daily application of chlorhexidine enabled virtually complete eradication of A2JM. The introduction of the comE gene did not significantly decrease the transformability of A2JM in in vitro or in vivo models. The addition of a deletion in the comE gene does, nonetheless, provide additional safety as it has a very low reversion frequency. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Based on the safety and efficacy profiles established in vitro and in animal models, A2JM appears suitable for safe use in human clinical trials.  相似文献
